Reason #4 to Live in Portland

Glenn has been a huge fan of Casablanca for, well, ever. I, on the other hand, tend to watch movies or TV half-heartedly–usually with a laptop open or recipe book or list-making-supplies in my lap. In general, I follow the dialog and occasionally look up. It’s caught me out a few times when we watch West Wing for the xxth time and I can quote the lines but have missed some visual cue or nuance until this viewing. But I’ve never been as revealed as I was yesterday when we went to see Casablanca in the theater. Evidently, there’s a bit more going on than I realized so my initial mediocre response may not have been accurate.

Yesterday we went to Cinema 21. It’s an old-time-y theater located on NW 21st street. (Wonder how they got their name?) Here’s how they describe themselves on their website:

Cinema 21 is an independently-owned movie theatre in Portland, Oregon featuring art house films.

And right now the art house films they’re featuring (ends today!) are Humphrey Bogart flicks: Casablanca and The Maltese Falcon. The ticket-seller is also the ticket taker, the snackbar is small and can be managed by one person, and the “big-screen” is not that big. But it was a lovely wholesome experience, with really good popcorn.

We had to park a ways away¬† but ended up just west of 23rd which is home to Pottery Barn, Williams Sonoma, Restoration Hardware and Paper Source {danger!} which are some of my favorite stores. There are also some fantastic looking restaurants so I know we’ll be back.

To get back to Casablanca, it turns out to be even better when you pay attention. Glenn may be on to something.
